Lucknow : Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district Friday, Congress officials Monday said.
State congress spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap Singh said: “Rahul Gandhi will be attending a programme at the Indian Institute of Techonology, Kanpur, besides other events.”
While more details of Gandhi’s day-long visit are yet to be disclosed, legislator Sanjiv Dariyabadi said Gandhi will attend a Dalit convention.
“The convention is titled ‘Social equality for all’ and Dalit representatives of the Congress will get an opportunity to meet Gandhi,” Dariyabadi told IANS.
Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal, who represents Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency, denied that the convention had anything to do with the tussle between the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Rahul’s visit and stay at a Dalit’s house in Amethi a few months ago was termed as a political drama by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
“Gandhi will stress on equality of all communities. The convention cannot be termed as an attack on the state government,” Jaiswal said.
