Thai Govt., Parliament agree to amend Article 291 to draft new charter

Bangkok : A meeting among representatives of the Thai government and Parliament resolved Monday to amend Article 291 of the Constitution to pave way for the establishment of a new constitution drafting assembly (CDA).

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, House Speaker Chai Chidchob and representatives from the six coalition parties and Senate, according to local newspaper BangkokPost’s website.

After the meeting, PM’s Office Minister Sukhumpong Ngonkham said the meeting agreed to set up a 120-member CDA to draft a new charter in 240 days.

He said 76 members of the CDA would represent 76 provinces and the rest of members would include eight political scientists, eight lawyers and eight specialists of public laws. He said 20 other CDA members would represent some professions.

Sukhumpong said he would draft a bill to amend Article 291 and a joint meeting of the House and Senate would be called next week to deliberate the bill, which could be passed in about 30 days.
