New Delhi : The economic slowdown does not seem to have made any dent on the coffers of the Railways if earnings posted in the first six months of the current fiscal are an indication.
During the period it posted an 18.91 per cent increase in revenue earnings.
The organisation earned Rs 25,502 crore between April and September as against Rs 21,447 crore earned in the same period last year.(One Crore: ten million)
It carried 401.89 million tonnes of freight traffic between April and August as compared to 370.25 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year, thereby registering an increase of 9.60 per cent.
During the month of September alone, Indian Railways earned Rs 1,454 crore. The earnings were mostly generated from transportation of coal, iron ore for exports and raw materials to steel plants, cement industry, fertilizer plants and other industries.
