Top U.S diplomat meets Pakistani PM

Islamabad : The U.S Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Richard Boucher, met Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday, officials said.

Boucher arrived in Islamabad on Saturday for talks on security matters and to remove tension over the recent U.S strikes and its troops’ incursion in the tribal regions.

The U.S diplomat called on the Prime Minister on the third of his visit to Pakistan.

A Foreign Ministry statement said The meeting was attended by Mr. Rehman Malik, Advisor to PM on Interior, Advisor on National Security, Mr. Mehmood Ali Durrani, Ms. Anne W. Patterson, US Ambassador in Pakistan and other senior officials, it said.

Richard Boucher, will also call on the Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi at the Foreign Office.

He visited the northwestern city of Peshawar on Sunday for talks on security situation in the troubled region.

The U.S Assistant Secretary of State met Governor North West Frontier Province Owais Ahmed Ghani and Chief Minister Amir Haider Hoti in Peshawar, officials said.

They said that Mr. Boucher was briefed on the on-going military offensives against the suspected militants in the tribal regions and Swat valley.

He was also apprised of the destruction caused by the aerial bombing of the positions of the militants, which have displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

Pakistani officials and U.S embassy were not giving details of Mr.

Boucher’s visit, who is the frequent visitor of the country.

The U.S diplomat is in Pakistan at a time when the security forces continued offensives against the militants.

The joint session of the parliament has been holding in-camera session of the situation in the tribal regions and majority members have called for halt to the offensives.
