Tokyo : India Inc and the Japanese industry have formulated a joint action plan to fight climate change and promote growth using clean technologies, following a pact Wednesday among leading chambers of the two sides.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) signed the pact on climate change with Nippon Keidanren – the Japanese Business Federation – and the Japan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), coinciding with the three-day visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
“At a time when climate change deadlock continues, CII-Keidanren-JCCI partnership would serve as a model co-operation between the industry of developing and developed countries,” said CII president K.V. Kamath.
“The partnership is expected to strengthen the current initiatives of Indian Government and Industry to fight climate change,” said Kamath who is part of a high-power business delegation with the prime minister.
The pact seeks to combine complementary strengths of India and Japan in technologies, resources and practices that could lead to climate change mitigation for the entire world. The pact covers the use of clean, renewable and efficient energy sources.
For business, climate change is a source of risk but also an opportunity to be understood by business leaders and managed properly, the CII said, adding the pact had opened new vistas for businesses on both sides.
Some of the immediate activities under the pact include a joint India-Japan position on climate change, setting-up of five working groups with experts from both sides and joint activities for climate change mitigation.
“CII believes that benefit of this partnership would not only be limited to industry alone but would also trickle down to a larger group of stakeholders,” the chamber said.
