Haryana to subsidise sanitary napkin manufacturing

Chandigarh : The Haryana government will subsidise the manufacture of sanitary napkins in the state, it was announced here Friday.

The Haryana health department plans to provide the subsidy through the state’s Women Development Corp (WDC), the state’s Health Minister Kartar Devi told reporters here.

She said the sanitary napkins will be manufactured in the villages by women’s groups under the Swasthya Mahila Sangh, an organisation set up by the central government in 1990-91 to promote health programmes in rural communities.

The necessary equipment will be procured by the Sangh on loan from the WDC, the minister said.

About 500 sanitary napkins will be manufactured per unit per day. She said the napkins will be sold at Rs.2 per napkin. The production cost of each napkin will be Rs.1.20, out of which Rs.1 will be subsidised by the health department.

Production will be star in first week next month in 10 districts out of the state’s 21 districts.
