Poll shows Conservative lead slashed by 11 points

By KUNA,

London : Further evidence of a lift for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown came in a poll here Tuesday suggesting Labour has slashed the main opposition Conservatives’ lead by 11 points in less than two months.

The survey for The Independent newspaper put Labour on 31 percent against 39 percent for the Conservatives. The smaller opposition Liberal Democrats were on 16 percent.

The eight-point Conservative lead is down from 12 points in a similar survey for the paper a month ago and 19 points at the start of last September and suggests that Labour is benefiting electorally from voters’ judgment on Brown’s handling of the economic crisis.

According to The Independent, today’s findings would end Conservative hopes of a landslide victory if repeated in a General Election, which would probably produce a hung Parliament with the Conservatives eight seats short of a majority.
