In his message, the Prime Minister said Anand has made the country proud with his exemplary performance and with his dedication and consistency has set a stellar example to all sportspersons in the country.

Anand beat Kramnik 6.5-4.5 with one game to spare in the 12-game match in Bonn, Germany Wednesday. That helped the Indian Grandmaster retain the title he won in the Linares-Morelia Linares tournament last year. It also makes him the first player to win the official World title in three formats.

The win by a huge margin will also carry Anand to the top of the World Rankings when they are released next.
