Tel Aviv/Gaza : Palestinian militants have fired two anti-tank rockets at an Israeli patrol near the border fence, in violation of the four-month-old truce, the Israeli army said on Friday.
The missiles were fired at a unit of paratroopers searching for explosive devices in an area to the south of the Kissufim crossing. No casualties have been reported among the Israeli troops.
Additional Israeli forces were sent to the area, and later entered Gaza, but failed to locate the attackers.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
This is the first time missiles have been fired at an Israeli patrol force since Israel and Hamas-led militants reached a truce agreement on June 19.
The radical Islamic Hamas movement seized control of the enclave last summer after clashes with pro-presidential Fatah.
Under the deal, the militants agreed to stop firing rockets into Israel, which in turn agreed to reopen its border crossings with the Gaza Strip to allow supplies of essential goods into the Palestinian territory.
However, Israel closed all crossings with the Gaza Strip on Thursday after a rocket exploded in an empty field near the town of Sderot in southern Israel. The little-known Palestinian ‘Brigades of Akko Martyrs’ group took responsibility for the attack.
