Washington : US authorities arrested nearly 300 anti-war activists in St. Paul, Michigan after thousands of people protested during the opening of the National Republican Convention, USA Today daily reported Tuesday.
The spokeswoman for the St. Paul Joint Information Center, Mary Jerde, said the arrests were made in the vicinity of the Xcel Energy Center, headquarters of the forum where the John McCain-Sarah Palin ticket will be made official before the November general elections.
The protesters yesterday demanded an end to the Iraqi occupation, and called upon US voters to defeat President George W. Bush’s possible successor.
According to organizers, about 30,000 people attended the protests, carrying posters and wearing masks reminiscent of the illegal jails and torture encouraged by the current administration.
