Cairo : Arab League leaders expressed hope for solving problems ranging from Gaza and Sudan to Iran as the 130th meeting of permanent representatives to the Arab League began in Cairo on Saturday, to prepare for Monday’s meeting of Arab foreign ministers.
Ahmad Abdel Aziz Qattan, the Saudi delegate at the meeting, also chairman of the session, said in an inauguration statement that the Palestinian cause remained the top issue of concern for the Arab nations.
He expressed deep regret at the inter-Palestinian divisions, urging Hamas and the Palestinian authority of Mahmoud Abbas to mend fences on basis of relevant Arab League resolutions, the agreements in Mecca and Sanaa and the Palestinian Constitution.
On Lebanon, he expressed hope that the Lebanese would resolve their problems on the basis of the Doha agreement and hailed the improvement in Beirut’s ties with Damascus.
Concerning Iraq, Qattan expressed hope that the country would witness freedoms, peace, democracy, justice and equality among its natives,.
The Saudi delegate voiced support for the recent agreement between the Arab League and the Sudanese president, conciliation for Somalia, and reiterated support for the UAE rights in the three Iranian-occupied islands.
The Iranian nuclear issue constitutes a challenge to the nations of the region and a source of concern, he said, expressing hope that it would be resolved peacefully.
