Swarovski-designed crystal trophies for ICC award winners

Dubai : Winners of the International Cricket Council (ICC) 2008 Awards each received a glittering crystal trophy created by the world’s leading crystal manufacturer Swarovski.

The design features a crystal cricket ball studded with over 4,200 Swarovski crystal chatons, cusped in a hand, which extends from an aluminium base.

The hand represents the theme of “breaking through” in the pursuit of excellence.

While Emerging Player of the Year Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis, Umpire of the Year Simon Taufel and Spirit of Cricket award winning Sri Lankan team each received a clear crystal ball, ODI Player of the Year Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Test Player of the Year Dale Steyn received trophies featuring a white ball and a red ball to signify the colour of balls used in those respective versions of the game.

Each trophy weighs 1.2 kg, is 30 cm in height and 11 cm in width.

West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, winner of the ICC Cricketer of the Year award named after Sir Gary Sobers as also England’s Charlotte Edwards, the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year, each received a trophy designed on the above model but with a red crystal ball, brass hand and gold-plated base.

These trophies weigh 3.8 kg each.

The trophies were presented at ICC’s glittering awards gala here Wednesday night.

Players who were selected for the ICC World ODI Team of the Year 2008 and the World ODI Test Team of the Year will each receive a commemorative, handcrafted cap, according to the ICC.

The Test and ODI caps vary in style to reflect the different forms of the game.

While Dhoni and Tendulkar made it to the ODI team, Virender Sehwag was the lone Indian to figure in the Test side.
