New Delhi : A report on the quality of Chinese power equipment entering India would be submitted to the government within two weeks, a senior official said here Thursday.
According to Central Electricity Authority member (planning) V.S. Verma, the document will be made public once it is submitted to the government. “We are at the last stages of making the report. It will be submitted within two weeks,” he said.
The CEA technical committee was set up in May to audit the quality of Chinese equipment, after concerns were raised about the quality of the equipment, which is often the most competitively priced in the market.
Verma, who also chairs the technical committee preparing the report, said the panel had looked into various issues and indicated that the quality of the Chinese equipment was not a matter of concern as much as the communication from Indian clients about the right specifications for the job.
Citing communication as one of the major problems, Verma said due to lack of common language, there was usually an Indian consultant acting as a go-between. “If we cannot insist on specification and communicate the right order, they (the Chinese) cannot be blamed,” he said.
Citing an example, he said that any import of foreign-made boilers has to pass through stringent norms and inspection as per Indian law.
“After that, if a finger is pointed at the quality of boilers, that is questioning our rules,” he said on the sidelines of a three-day summit, India Electricity 2008.
Some of the Chinese companies supplying equipment to India are Shangai Electrical, DongFang Electric Corp and Harbin Power Equipment Co.
