New Delhi : Steps taken to protect the environment of the national capital will be showcased at the upcoming UN General Assembly session by Sheila Dikshit, who will become the first Chief Minister of an Indian state to chair a debate at the international forum.
Dikshit has been invited by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to chair a round table discussion on environmental sustainability, one of the main points of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG), on September 25.
“This is for the first time that a chief minister is going to address the general assembly in which more than 180 countries are expected to participate,” Delhi Environment Secretary J K Dadoo told PTI.
The Chief Minister will leave for New York, the UN Headquarters, on September 23 to attend the meeting.
A short film which showcases Delhi government’s efforts on conservation of forest and environment will also be screened at the event.
“Our efforts have been acknowledged globally. As half of the period of MDG commitment have passed, Dikshit will talk about our achievements in these areas especially toward conservation of forests and environment,” Dadoo said.
Dikshit’s speech will also include various carbon emission control measures taken by her government and other initiatives towards protection of the environment.
“The chief minister will also highlight the introduction of CNG buses and metro rail in the city,” Dadoo said.
