The police said they had been tipped off about the presence of a group of militants hiding in the Tarawaali area of Poonch, about 230 km northwest of the state’s winter capital Jammu. Police and army personnel laid a cordon around their suspected hideout early in the morning, but came under heavy fire.

“The securitymen came under heavy fire when they were zeroing in on the hideout of militants in which two army soldiers and two Special Police Officers got killed,” Inspector General of Police (Jammu zone) K. Rajindra told IANS.

He said two security personnel were also injured in the gun fight.

There is no report of any casualties on the militants’ side, he said.

“We suspect they are Lashkar-e-Toiba (LET) militants,” the official said.
