Abu Dhabi : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched a new fund to help refugee and displaced women and children across the world.
Launched under the patronage of Sheikha Fatima, wife of the UAE’s founder and first president Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and chairperson of the UAE General Women’s Union, to mark the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the new initiative is a fund raising effort benefiting refugee women and children in displacement.
“Sheikha Fatima established this special fund considering the tremendous needs of refugee women and children affected by displacement,” the state-run Emirates News Agency (WAM) quoted Ali Abdullah AlKabbi, chairman of the board of UAE Red Crescent Authority, as saying.
“The campaign is a milestone in a partnership between UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) and the UAE Red Crescent,” he said.
The funds raised will support UNHCR’s projects in girls’ education, livelihood, health and nutrition for some of the most vulnerable displaced women and children around the world.
The 90-day campaign began Monday with a number of radio and television spots in the UAE featuring refugee women and children. It will also include a poster campaign in malls and billboards.
