London : The British government has given a million pounds (Rs 80 million) to help with flood relief in Bihar, it announced Wednesday.
The aid, which will be channeled through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is a substantial increase on the pledge of 150,000 pounds announced a fortnight ago.
The money will be used to provide 125,000 displaced people with nutrition, clean water and sanitation, health services and shelter.
Douglas Alexander, Britain’s cabinet minister responsible for international development, said: “In changing course, the Kosi River has caused a trail of destruction across India and Nepal that has affected millions of people.
“These people could be stranded for several months in difficult conditions. This extra contribution will help UNICEF to deliver the food, shelter and sanitation so urgently needed.”
