Srinagar : At least 30 people were injured in clashes between protesters and security men in Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Friday.
Protests after the Friday prayers called by the joint co-ordination committee of both groups of the separatist Hurriyat Conference led to the clashes between the stone-throwing protesters and the security men in Nowhatta area here.
“Protesters resorted to heavy stone-pelting on the security men deployed and also snatched the teargas gun from a policeman in Nowhatta,” a senior police officer told IANS.
“Police used teargas shells and batons to disperse the protesters who kept on re-grouping in the area. Fourteen security men were injured in the stone-pelting by the mob. Three protesters sustained injuries after security men fired rubber bullets to quell the protests,” the police officer said.
Protests and demonstrations were held at many other places in Srinagar and elsewhere in the Kashmir Valley, though they remained peaceful, police said.
