30 students hospitalised after mid-day meal in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow : About 30 students were hospitalised after having lunch under the mid-day meal scheme in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district, an official said Friday.

“The condition of all the students is now stable,” education official Satish Tiwari told IANS over the telephone.

Under the mid-day meal scheme, described as the world’s largest for feeding schoolchildren, the Daniyapur government primary school had provided pulses, chapattis and panjiri (a sweet dish prepared with flour) to its students Thursday.

“The exact cause of the incident is yet to be established. All the edible stock of the school has been sealed and will be sent lab testing,” Tiwari said.

The school headmaster has been suspended with immediate effect.

About 150,000 schools are covered under the mid-day meal scheme in Uttar Pradesh. Under the scheme, lunch is provided to students of various classes till eight standard. Over 18.6 million students are enrolled under the scheme in the state.
