By DPA,

New York : The UN General Assembly agreed Friday to hold discussion on Kosovo’s declaration of independence and to support Serbia’s request for an opinion from the International Court of Justice on whether that independence is legal.

Serbia, which still claims Kosovo as its province, asked the 192-nation to debate the legal aspects of Kosovo’s independence and inscribe the issue on its agenda of discussion during the 63rd session.

Serbia’s Foreign Miniter Vuk Jeremic said last month that Belgrade filed a petition to the court at The Hague to demand its legal opinion. He said Belgrade will respect the court’s decision.

A delegate from the US mission to the UN said Washington was not opposed to the Kosovo debate in the assembly. But Washington will disassociate itself from any conclusion to be reached by that body whether Kosovo’s declaration of independence was legal or not.

At last 43 governments, including the US and many Europeans, have recognised Kosovo’s independence, which it declared in February, severing itself from Belgrade. Kosovo adopted a constitution in June.
