NATO forces “reluctantly” kill Afghan civilian in South

By Xinhua,

Kabul : A patrol of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on Saturday “reluctantly” shot and killed a civilian who failed to yield to warnings to stop in Sangin district of southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, said an alliance statement.

”The incident began when a civilian approached an ISAF foot patrol while the patrol gave verbal warnings asking for the civilian to stop,” the statement said.

“The patrol fired two warning shots after the ill-fated civilian ignoring the verbal warning,” it said, “but the civilian still failed to stop.”

Fearing a suicide bomber, the patrol targeted the civilian and fired one round wounding the civilian who later died from that wound, it added.

Meanwhile, the ISAF noted in the statement that civilians who fail to yield or make rapid advancements can result in the patrol using lethal force in self defence.

The incident just came a day after another civilian was killed by ISAF fire as failing to stop by the warning in southern Afghan province of Kandahar.

Both ISAF and the U.S.-led Coalition forces have committed such “mistakes” during operations since their deployment here nearly seven years ago and claimed many civilian lives.

Conflicts and spiraling insurgency have claimed the lives of over 38,00 people with around 1,445 civilians so far this year in the war-torn country.
