“The Barasat district court has sentenced Gunjan Ghosh and six others guilty of abducting college student Roma Jhawar in 2005 to life imprisonment. In addition, each of them will have to pay a fine of Rs 3,000 to the court,” Additional District Sessions Judge S.P. Chowdhury told reporters.

The seven were convicted Friday. Two of the accused – Dasrath and Damodar Yadav – were acquitted. They had guarded the house where the girl was kept.

Roma, 20, was kidnapped on her way to college Feb 4, 2005 by 11 people in Salt Lake in North 24 Parganas. The abductors had demanded Rs.2 million as ransom.

Roma was rescued by police Feb 5 from a house at Phoolbagan area in northeastern Kolkata. Nine people were arrested and part of the ransom was recovered.

One gang member, Arbind Prasad, was shot dead by fellow member Pappu Mahato after an altercation over the share of ramsom. Mahato fled after the murder
