Colombo : Former Sri Lankan president Dingiri Banda Wijetunga, 91, died Sunday morning in a hospital in the central town of Kandy, hospital sources said. He is survived by his daughter.
Wijetunga, who belonged to the United National Party, was prime minister from 1989 to 1993. He was appointed the president after the assassination of incumbent Ranasinghe Premadasa by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber.
Wijetunga held the position till November 1994 when he resigned as party leader.
