New Delhi : A city court Tuesday granted bail to suspended Delhi Police inspector Rameshwar Khatri, who was arrested in connection with the multi-million dollar illegal kidney transplant racket.
According to the police, Khatri had a hand in extorting Rs.1.98 million from Upender Kumar and Amit Kumar, the alleged kingpins of the racket.
Additional Sessions Judge V.K. Bansal granted bail to Khatri and asked him to give two sureties of Rs.35,000 each.
Khatri, who headed the special staff team consisting of eight police officers, was arrested July 31. The other seven in the team were arrested earlier.
According to police officials, assistant sub inspector Ravinder Kumar Singh, posted in Khatri’s team, along with two head constables and four constables, had picked up Upender Kumar and brought him to Connaught Place police station Jan 7.
The team later let him go after Amit Kumar visited the police station and allegedly gave them Rs.1.98 million.
The bribery came to light after accused Kumar told the Uttar Pradesh police about it during interrogation.
Six people have been arrested in India over the scam. The men behind the racket are believed to have charged up to $50,000 for a kidney from clients from across the globe, according to the police.
The kidneys are believed to have come from poor migrant workers, some of whom have said they were kidnapped and drugged. The police say the illegal donors were likely to have been paid around Rs.40,000.
