ROI surprisingly opened with out-of-form Rahul Dravid (42 batting) and Jaffer (50), who gave a cautious start to the innings with a 77-run stand.

Dravid looked out of touch and bade his time at the wicket with Ishant Sharma bowling a solid opening spell. The lanky fast bowler gave only three runs from his five overs that included three maidens. The score crawled to 37 for no loss after the first hour’s play.

The former India skipper took 34 balls to reach the double figures.

Jaffer broke the shackles with two consecutive boundaries off Pradeep Sangwan’s first over with a wristy flick to mid-wicket and a fluent cover drive.

Chetanya Nanda broke the partnership when Jaffer tried to work the leg-spinner on the on side only to give a leading edge at short-extra cover. Jaffer’s knock included five boundaries.

Dravid’s 42 came in 86 balls with four boundaries while S. Badrinath was on seven from 33 balls at the end of the first session’s play (34 overs).
