New Delhi : The Supreme Court Thursday refused to stall the trial of industrialist Ashok Todi in a Kolkata metropolitan court for his alleged role in abetting his son-in-law Rizwanur Rehman’s suicide.
Refusing to accord an urgent hearing to Todi’s plea for stalling his trial, a bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice J.M. Panchal decided to take up his plea Oct 13, the day slated by the apex court’s registry for hearing of his petition.
Indicted by the Central Bureau of Investigation for allegedly abetting Rizwanur’s suicide, Todi moved the apex court seeking suspension of the trial court’s proceeding against him.
In his petition, Todi contended that the CBI was only asked by the Calcutta High Court to find out the nature of the death of Rizwanur but it proceeded further and filed a charghesheet against him, seeking his trial for aiding and abetting suicide.
Besides Todi, the CBI chargesheeted six others Sep 22 for their alleged role in abetment of Rizwanur’s suicide.
Besides Todi, the chargesheet named Todi’s brother Pradeep, brother in-law Anil Saraogi, IPS officer and former deputy commissioner of Kolkata Police Ajoy Kumar, former assistant commissioner of police Sukanti Chakraborty, sub-inspector Krishnendu Das and Rizwanur’s neighbour S.M. Moinuddin alias Pappu.
The Metropolitan Magistrate court in Kolkata has asked the accused to appear before it Oct 27.
