Germany to increase police trainers in Afghanistan

Berlin : The German government decided to double the number of its police trainers and experts in Afghanistan from 60 to 120, an official press release said Thursday.

A joint press release issued by the German Interior Ministry and Foreign Ministry said that the decision was taken during a ministerial meeting headed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Wednesday.

The new decision, which will cost 170 million euros, would sustain security and stability and benefit the people in Afghanistan, it pointed out.

German trainers and experts are deployed in Afghanistan as part of the European Union police mission (EUPOL) in which more than 180 experts from 21 countries are participating, it said.

According to the release, about 24,000 Afghan policemen were trained by German police experts.
