“Today democracy was murdered,'” said Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil.

“The report is an eyewash and a drama being enacted on the eve of the election. In the name of (inquiry commission head Justice G.T.) Nanavati, they are fooling the people,” Gohil said.

As many as 59 people were killed in the train burning tragedy at Godhra railway station, about 140 km from here. It also triggered statewide communal violence, in which about 2,000 people were kileld.

Gohil also accused Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) of “playing politics” in the name of Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (GUJCOC) Act, for which the state government is awaiting the central government’s nod.

He said the Congress will oppose the GUJCOC resolution in the assembly Friday for its “unconstitutional and anti-human” clauses in the amended bill pending with the central government since 2004.
