“We must respect and work with each other to peacefully resolve our problems and build South Asia into a common market of trade and technology,” Zardari told the 192-member United Nations General Assembly yesterday, a day after he had wide-ranging discussions with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He pledged to continue the “composite dialogue” with India to resolve all outstanding issues and said whether it is the “core issue” of Kashmir or cooperation in water resources, the two sides must accommodate each other’s interests.

Better relations among Pakistan, Afghanistan and India would help create the regional environment that is more conducive to reducing militancy in the region, Zardari said in his 20-minute speech.

Most of the address was devoted to Pakistan’s “determination” to fight terrorism and remembering his slain wife and former Premier Benazir Bhutto and her legacy.

Pakistan will confront terrorists if necessary with all its force including police, army and air force, Zardari said.

Without naming the US, which has led several incursions into its tribal belt targeting militants recently, Zardari warned it that violating Pakistan’s sovereignty will not be helpful in elimination of the menace of terrorism.

“Indeed, it could have the opposite effect.”
