Vikas Verma, son of state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Lalji Verma and his nephew Vineet Verma were amongst those accused of a bid to kidnap Santosh Yadav, a student of Lucknow University. A case was registered against them at the Hazratganj police station late Sunday, an official said.

“The complainant, Santosh Yadav, has said that Vikas and about a dozen men pulled him inside a car and tried to kidnap him,” Inspector A.S. Chauhan of Hazratganj police station told IANS.

The incident reportedly took place Saturday night when about a dozen men in three cars reached Yadav’s hostel, manhandled him and pulled him inside one of the cars. But Yadav raised an alarm and the vehicles were intercepted by the police.

While about 10 people managed to escape, three youths were arrested and Yadav was rescued.

“Those arrested have been identified as Shailendra, Manish and Anil and they have been sent to jail. The vehicles used in the incident have also been seized,” said Lucknow Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar.

Police have conducted raids at several places to find the other accused.

“We have no idea whether Vikas was present there at the time of the incident. However, we are probing the matter on Yadav’s complaint,” Chauhan added.

The university has announced that students found involved in the incident would be suspended.
