The police blamed separatist National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) for the explosion in Bhandarima, 185 km north of the Tripura capital, Agartala.

“A powerful improvised explosive device (IED) was planted by NLFT at Bhandarima,” said police spokesman Nepal Das.

“It was exploded when the BSF troopers were conducting their routine patrolling along the India-Bangladesh border,” the spokesman said.

“After the explosion, NLFT guerrillas from a hill top opened fire on the personnel, who retaliated and the rebels fled,” Das told IANS.

The BSF man and a worker, who sustained splinter injuries in the explosion, were admitted to a hospital.

The civilian workers were busy in border fencing works at a nearby place when the explosion took place.

The NLFT and another outlawed outfit, the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), have been waging insurgency for a sovereign Tripura for indigenous tribals.
