Srinagar/Jammu : Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and Defence Secretary Vijay Singh Friday reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
The central team held meetings with senior officers of the state administration, and the police, army and paramilitary forces in Srinagar as well as in Jammu.
State Chief Secretary S.S. Kapur and state Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda briefed the union secretaries about the security situation in the state and apprised them about the arrangements made for the smooth conduct of Lok Sabha elections in the state.
The union secretaries expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made for the holding of elections.
Those present at the meeting included Financial Commissioner (Home) Samuel Verghese, Director General (CID) Ashok Bhan, divisional commissioners and inspectors general of police besides senior officers of the army and the paramilitary forces.
The central team had first held a security review meeting in Srinagar Thursday and met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and focused on the rise in infiltration from across the border and reports of terrorists attempting to disrupt the polls.
On Friday afternoon, they visited Jammu and continued with the security review meetings which concluded in the evening.
“The visiting officials were briefed about the security arrangements that have been put in place,” a senior officer who attended the meetings told IANS. The central team was told that the state government and security agencies have taken precautions to avert any terrorist threat.
Jammu and Kashmir politicians have been told how to ensure their own security and to avoid mingling with crowds.
The official said that the security arrangements that were made for the assembly polls last year have been upgraded.
Jammu and Kashmir has six Lok sabha seats and will go to polls in five phases, beginning April 16.
