Chennai : The Tamil Nadu government Friday denied permission to police personnel to hold a rally April 16 that was aimed to be a show of strength vis-a-vis lawyers and courts, a police official said.

“A unionised police force is not acceptable either to the government or officialdom and hence permission has been denied and the tidings communicated to its organisers, led by Anthony Samy, who had proclaimed himself leader of the ‘police association’, which is not recognised,” the official told IANS.

“The exigencies of the forthcoming elections, legal wrangles and the prospect of setting a wrong precedent also contributed to the denial of permission,” he added.

There has been a lot of bad blood between the state police and lawyers ever since the two sides clashed in February.
