Raipur : The Chhattisgarh government Saturday suspended a central jail superintendent for allegedly providing mobile phone facilities to prisoners and inciting them to react violently when police searched the prison, officials said.
Rajendra Gaikwad, superintendent of Ambikapur central jail, was suspended with immediate effect after a departmental probe report found he had let prisoners use mobile phones, drink beer and smoke ganja – against jail manuals.
Home departmment sources said the probe conducted by Inspector General (Jails) M.W. Ansari found the jail superindent guilty of assaulting an IAS officer, P. Dayanand, who led the police raid Thursday.
The jail superintendent has been found guilty of provoking about 1,500 prisoners to react violently against the police operation. The prisoners had pelted stones from inside the jail complex on the team that conducted the search.
