The special cell was established on the direction of the state election commission office for keeping tabs on any inflammatory speeches or objectionable content being uploaded on various websites, a senior police official in the local crime branch here said.

According to the official, the war of words between various political leaders some times leads to objectionable content being displayed on websites.

The special cell will be manned by personnel with sound knowledge of the internet having dealt with cyber crime in their routine duties, the official said adding the staff would be responsible for tracking down any content violating the election code of conduct.

The cell would monitor speeches, audio, video formats, songs, ring tones, pictures, social networking websites, blogs and any content that is considered objectionable under election rules. In case of any violation of the model code of conduct, the entire material would be downloaded and sent to the election officials for further scrutiny and action, he said.

The Gujarat Police had also deployed personnel from its cyber crime team during the 2007 assembly polls in the state for monitoring any objectionable content being displayed on various websites by the political parties or their candidates. So far, no cases have been registered against any candidate for uploading objectionable content in cyberspace during polls, the official added.
