Puducherry : The PMK Tuesday withdrew support to the Congress government in the union territory of Puducherry, Raj Bhavan sources said.
PMK MP M. Ramadoss accompanied by legislators R.K.R. Anantharaman, P. Arul Murugan and N.G. Panneerselvam formally submitted a letter to the governor withdrawing support to the government, an official said.
While Anantharaman and Murugan are elected legislators, Panneerselvam is a nominated member.
The development leaves the V. Vaithyalingam ministry with the support of 20 elected members – 10 of the Congress, seven from the DMK and three independents – in the house that has 30 elected and three nominated legislators.
“The move is likely to bring the two main constituents of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) closer to each other in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as the DMK,” a Congress leader here told IANS.
“While we are dependent on the support of the DMK here for our majority, it is vice versa in Tamil Nadu,” the source added.
In neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s ministry with 95 legislators survives on the support of 35 Congress legislators in the 235-member house which has a current strength of 232.
