New Delhi : The Election Commission Tuesday sought an explanation from Communications and IT Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for distributing letters highlighting the achievements of the UPA government and also pulled up Andhra Pradesh Congress chief D. Srinivas for his comments about Varun Gandhi.
“The EC has sought explanation from Jyotiraditya Scindia for distributing letters in Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh. These letters were received by the commission and examined,” Deputy Election Commissioner R. Balakrishnan told reporters here.
“Though the letters were dated before the polls were announced, the Election Commission found that the letters were distributed after the announcement of the poll dates.”
The poll panel has asked Scindia, re-nominated from Guna constituency in Madhya Pradesh, to file a written reply by Wednesday.
The Commission also conveyed its “strong disapproval” of statements made by Andhra Pradesh Congress chief D. Srinivas, who had made offensive remarks about Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi.
“The Commission has expressed its strong disapproval to Srinivas for his comments and asked him not to make such statements,” Balakrishnan said.
On April 9, the Commission issued notice to Srinivas for violating the model code of conduct for his remarks aimed at Varun Gandhi.
Addressing a public meeting in Nizamabad Sunday, Srinivas allegedly said he would cut off the hands of those who pointed a finger at the minorities. He also allegedly said he would sacrifice himself for them if needed.
