Chandigarh : British Columbia will invest Rs.60 lakh in Chandigarh to set up an office of its in-market business investment and skills liaison representative, a senior official of the Canadian province said here.
“British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell chose the Baisakhi parade in Vancouver city to announce that his province will further encourage trade and investment from northern India,” Crystal Sawyer, manager-India operations for the British Columbia regional innovation chair of the Canada-India Business and Economic Development Centre (BEDC), told IANS.
The sanctioned amount is in addition to the Rs.5 crore, already announced by the British Columbia government for furthering its trade ties with India.
To give a Punjabi touch to the new office being set up here, the Canadian province has announced the appointment of D.J. Sandhu, a management professor at the University of Fraser Valley (UFV), to be its first incumbent.
“India is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing economies and British Columbia has deep and established roots with the people of India.” Premier Campbell was quoted as saying in a statement, released by the Canda-India BEDC.
“Establishing a British Columbia in-market business investment and skills liaison representative meets a commitment made in our Asia-Pacific initiative to establish a full-time presence in key Asian markets,” he added.
The new outreach office will help entrepreneurs from Punjab to invest and migrate to British Columbia for setting up businesses there.
