Chennai : Tamil Nadu, which is facing severe power shortage, can buy around 750 MW of electricity from Andhra Pradesh once the gas-based power plants in that state resume production with the gas from Reliance Industries’ Krishna Godavari basin, a top industry official said here Saturday.
“Andhra Pradesh is expected to have 2,000 MW additional power generation because of the KG basin gas. The Tamil Nadu government is keen on buying anything between 500-700 MW,” C.R. Swaminathan, chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)-southern region, told reporters.
The Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries started gas production in its deep-sea Krishna Godavari (KG) fields, off the Andhra coast, April 2.
The gas from the KG fields is expected to revive several gas-based power plants in Andhra Pradesh.
Industries in Tamil Nadu now face 40 percent power cuts and the situation may turn worse this summer.
“We have requested the state government to cancel the power cut for the night shift as some states have surplus power during that time which can be bought,” said C.K. Ranganathan, chairman of the CII Tamil Nadu State Council.
According to him the state government has agreed to this proposal in principle.
Swaminathan said in 2009-10, the CII-SR would remain focussed on the modalities for revival of the economy.
“In the infrastructure area we will urge the Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry governments to attract some big ticket infrastructure projects like the aero park near Chennai and set up special multi sector economic zones,” he added.
