New Delhi : The Election Commission’s action on violation of the model code of conduct is “not stringent enough”, an official in the Delhi chief electoral offiicer’s (CEO) office said Monday.
J.K Sharma, Delhi’s joint electoral officer, said that for these polls they have been receiving complaints on violations of the model code of conduct from different political party leaders, but most have been on frivolous ground.
“Now that the nomination process is over, the nature of the complaints in general will be serious and we will look into it accordingly. Based on the authenticity of the complaint, we will send a notice to the accused. However I feel that our action is just not stringent enough,” Kapoor told IANS.
The most recent case of violation of the model code of conduct in Delhi was when the Election Commission issued a notice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the Chandni Chowk constituency Vijender Gupta for allegedly trying to bribe voters.
The commission’s decision April 18 came after Congress candidate Kapil Sibal from the same constituency alleged that the BJP leader’s wife had told a gathering of senior citizens at a function that their old-age pension had been doubled from Rs.500 to Rs.1,000 after “Gupta signed” the order.
