“This order (of the Supreme Court) was long awaited. Anyway, it is never too late. The order is also not particularly confined to the massacre of Muslims at the Gulbarga Society and is general in nature for rioting that took place even in other parts of Ahmedabad,” he said.

The apex court order came on a petition filed by Lakia Jafri, wife of Congress’ former MP Ehsan Jafri, who is presumed dead in the attack on Gulbarga Society area as his body was never found. At least 39 were killed while 30 are missing in the Feb 27, 2002 incident.

However, the Congress’ state unit declined to comment on the apex court order.

“The matter is subjudice. The Congress party would not like to comment on the issue,” said Leader of the Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly Shaktisinh Gohil.

Minutes after the Supreme Court order, a large number of security personnal were deployed across Ahmedabad. Police personnel were also deployed at major highway intersections.
