Moscow : A senior police officer shot dead three people and injured six others at a supermarket in southern Moscow in a shooting police said could have been sparked by a family row.
The police chief reportedly frequently quarrelled at home, with his wife being unhappy about the amount of time he was spending at work.
“At about 00.30 (Moscow time), Denis Yevsyukov killed the driver of a Chevrolet Lanos who dropped him at the store,” Investigation Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said Monday.
“The police officer then entered the supermarket and opened fire, killing a female cashier and a man, and injuring six others. He was arrested.”
Yevsyukov, police chief of the capital’s Tsaritsino district, offered no resistance when police tried to arrest him, a police official said adding he has been taken to a psychiatric clinic for examination.
Police officials said a possible motive for the shooting could be a family argument.
“Yevsyukov had a major row with his wife before the incident,” a police official said, adding Yevsyukov left his house and had a dispute with the driver before killing him and turning his attention to the supermarket.
Yevsyukov is “now in an emotionally distressed state and cannot give account of what happened”, the police source said, adding the attacker was also slightly drunk during the attack.
He was appointed chief of the southern district’s police last November and had occupied senior positions before. Yevsyukov was described by colleagues as an efficient and experienced police officer.
