Islamabad : A suspected US missile strike in Pakistan’s troubled South Waziristan tribal district near Afghan border Wednesday killed at least six people, officials said.
Two missiles, believed to have been fired from a US-operated Predator drone, hit a house in Kani Goram area of the district, a known safe-haven of Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters.
“According to the information we received from our local sources, the explosions destroyed a house and a vehicle parked there and killed six people,” said a local intelligence official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The official said two drone aircrafts were seen flying in the area when the attacks took place.
Identities of the dead were not immediately known.
South Waziristan is the stronghold of chief of Pakistani Talibans, Baituallah Mehsud, who is blamed for a series of bombings on security forces and government functionaries.
Mehsud has repeatedly vowed to avenge the US attacks, which he says are being carried out with the involvement of Pakistani security forces.
