New Delhi : One person was injured when Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists came to blows at a five-star hotel in Delhi Thursday during the recording of a television debate between their candidates from West Delhi, police said.
A BJP activist, Sunil Jindal, was admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital with cuts on his arms.
Abha Gupta, media manager of BJP candidate Jagdish Mukhi, alleged that Jindal was attacked with a knife inside the banquet hall of the Le Meridien Hotel in New Delhi. But police denied this.
The debate between Mukhi and Congress candidate Mahabal Mishra was organised by television channel Aaj Tak.
Gupta claimed an argument over the issue of water heated up and Mishra even threatened Mukhi. She said Mishra’s supporters got angry and one of them attacked Jindal with a knife. “Jindal suffered injuries on the arms. He is unconscious,” Gupta added.
However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Shankar Das said there was no knife attack.
“There was an exchange of abuses and it came to blows between the activists of two parties during the programme. Jindal got cuts on his hand from broken glass,” Das told IANS.
No case has been registered, he said. “No one has approached us with a formal complaint. We have asked the India Today group to provide us the tapes of the show,” he said.
