Ambala (Haryana) : Lashing out at the opposition parties for making “baseless allegations” against the Congress, party president Sonia Gandhi Thursday said they had “no principles and schemes for the people” and prime minister’s post was the only motto of their leaders.
Addressing a rally at the Gandhi ground in Ambala Cantt here, Gandhi, clad in a printed rust-coloured sari, asserted that the Congress would win all 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana and also return to power at the centre.
“There are many kinds of politics and fronts being offered by the other political parties. They have no principles and schemes and programmes for people. But the motto of their leaders seems to be only to become prime minister,” she said in her speech in Hindi.
She said the Congress was unlike these parties and believed in serving the poor and weaker sections of society.
Earlier, Gandhi made almost an identical speech at Hansi town in south Haryana.
People waited in sizzling heat for hours to listen to the Congress president. She spoke there for just over 10 minutes.
“The NDA (National Democratic Alliance), BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) and others are only making baseless allegations against the Congress,” Gandhi said in an oblique reference to the latest controversy over the Bofors issue.
“I want to ask them what they have done for various sections, especially for farmers. The answer is they have done nothing,” she said.
“In 2004, you gave us a chance to form the government at the centre. We gave you an honest and upright prime minister in Manmohan Singh. His government was able to implement so many development schemes in these five years. We want your support to carry this work forward,” she added.
Gandhi said that the BJP went out of power in 2004 because of its wrong policies. She said that the BJP now talked of terrorism and did not want to remember that the parliament attack and the Kandahar hijack episode took place in their tenure.
