Suvinder Singh Batth, a well-known figure in British kabaddi circles, was shot and killed shortly after midnight July 28 outside a pub he owned at Bilston, Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands region – home to a large number of Britsh Sikhs.

The father of four was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital, West Midlands police said.

After the shooting, Batth was cradled at first in the arms of his son Gavin, after whom the bar is named.

A post mortem established he died from a single gunshot to his chest.

Moving swiftly, West Midlands police arrested nine people last week – all of Indian origin.

Six men and a woman appeared before magistrates in Wolverhampton Saturday and were remanded in custody.

They have been named as: Gurpreet Singh Ottalan, 21; Onkar Singh Sangha, 21; Narinder Kumar, 25; Jasbir Singh Takhar, 22; Neesha Dubb, 19; Jarnal Singh Bajwa, 34, and Sukwinder Singh Sanghera, 23.

In addition, a 17 year-old man was arrested Friday and another man, aged 23, has been released on bail pending further enquiries, police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Clews has urged anyone with information to contact the Major Investigation Unit at West Bromwich police station on 0845-113-5000 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.

“If someone has information and is worried about coming forward, please be assured there are a number of ways in which we can help,” she said.
