Jhajjar (Haryana) : Another suspected ‘honour killing’ was reported in Haryana’s Jhajjar district Sunday, with the bodies of a man and a minor girl who went missing from their homes some days ago found hanging from a tree on the outskirts of their village.
“At this point of time we cannot conclude whether it was suicide or murder. But after studying the background of the case and seeing the circumstances, we cannot rule out the possibility of ‘honour killing’,” district police chief Saurabh Singh told IANS.
The couple – Sandeep Singh and Monika – lived in the same village. On the basis of their school certificates, Saurabh Singh said the girl was a minor while Sandeep Singh was 22 years old.
Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
“The couple eloped from the village some days ago and the girl’s family registered a complaint against Sandeep Aug 5. We are investigating this case from all angles. Things will become clearer once we get the post-mortem and forensic reports,” added Saurabh Singh.
Police sources said injury marks had been detected on the couple’s knees.
The incident comes close on the heels of another “honour killing” where a young couple was allegedly beaten to death by family members of the girl in a village in Rohtak district Aug 6.
And last month, a 21-year-old man was lynched for marrying against the wishes of his community in Haryana’s Jind district.
