One of the undertrials was re-arrested during a search operation, police said.

The six accused persons being tried for various cases were brought to the Giridih district court, where they were kept in a cell.

They broke a window of the court lock-up and escaped, according to police. One of them was arrested.

Angry policemen questioned other undertrails in the lock-up about the jail break. When police started beating them up, media persons, including some TV journalists, present in the court complex wanted to cover the incident.

When reporters started asking questions as to why policemen were thrashing other undertrials, the cops chased them away and allegedly caned some of them, said a witness. Four journalists were injured.

Journalists sat on a protest demonstration seeking action against the errant cops.
