Hyderabad : Andhra Pradesh police Tuesday arrested one of their own – a sub-inspector of police – for allegedly cheating a college student after promising to marry her. A court later sent him to two weeks in judicial custody.
Ranganath Goud, who was absconding since Razia Sultana, 18, lodged a complaint against him last month, was arrested by Guntur district police – three days after she began an indefinite fast outside the office of Guntur district superintendent of police, demanding senior police officials intervene to make Goud marry her.
Goud was later presented before a court in Tenali and the magistrate sent him to judicial custody for two weeks. The police officer was shifted to Guntur sub-jail Tuesday evening.
The relatives and friends of the police officer, however, staged a protest against the arrest. They alleged that the police were trying to force him to marry Razia.
Earlier, Goud escaped from a hotel in Guntur town after some media persons reached there on learning of his presence.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court had last week directed the Guntur police not to arrest Goud till Monday.
Earlier, a lower court had dismissed anticipatory bail petition filed on behalf of the policeman.
Razia alleged that the police officials were not taking any steps to either arrest Goud or convince him to marry her though she lodged a complaint against him two weeks ago.
The B.Pharmacy student alleged that the sub-inspector, posted at Ponnuru police station, sexually exploited her by promising to marry her and was now trying to marry someone else. Women’s organisations have also come out in support of Razia.
The police had registered a case of sexual assault, cheating and criminal intimidation against the cop based on Razia’s complaint that he had cheated her after promising to marry her.
Goud disappeared after he was suspended following Razia’s allegations.
The police decided to conduct DNA tests on both but she refused to undergo the tests until she meets Goud.
