Under the banner of a citizens’ group Welfare, Medical, Educational and Legal Assistance (AWMELA), eminent residents of the district had on August 14 sent a memorandum to the President of India condemning the BJP MP’s attack on the unarmed workers of the Ulema Council killing one youth and injuring many others, and demanding his immediate arrest.

AWMELA had also condemned fake Police encounters like Sohrabuddin, Batla House, Manipur and demanded time bound high level probe under judicial supervision for all such fake encounters. They deplored NHRC report on Batla House encounter as the Commission did not even visit the House No. L-18 where the encounter took place on September 19, 2008. In order to bring to light the truth trial of Batla House accused the group had demanded constitution of a fast track court to hear this case on daily basis.

In a communication to the AWMELA, the secretariat of the President acknowledged the memorandum and informed that the same is being examined by it.

The AWMELA in its August 14 meeting held at the residence of Dr. Javed Akhtar, President AWMELA, passed following resolutions and sent them to the President through the District Magistrate of Azamgarh. The group also made online submission of the memo to the President.

1. that we strongly condemn the road rage expressed by Mr. Ramakant Yadav, M.P., Azamgarh, on Azamgarh-Shahganj highway on 12th August, 2009.
2. that the unprovoked firing by Mr. Ramakant Yadav, M.P’s cavalcade on unarmed Muslim youths resulting in the loss of a youthful life and injury to other youths amounts to culpable homicide and is an example of deplorable belligerence.
3. that criminal-political nexus is injurious to the health of our secular democracy and must be treated as an antinational activity on part of political parties indulging in it.
4. that in view of named FIR against Mr. Ramakant Yadav, M.P., he must be arrested immediately to uphold the dignity of Law.
5. that we strongly condemn all seemingly fake Police encounters like Sohrabuddin, Batla House, Manipur just to name a few.
6. that we demand time bound high level probe under judicial supervision for all such seemingly fake encounters.
7. that we highly deplore such NHRC report (Batla House) where the Commission felt so constrained that it could not even visit L-18 Batla House to ascertain certain vital facts about the building and possible escape routes.
8. that in order to bring to light the truth trial of Batla House accused should be consolidated and proceeded through a fast track court on daily basis.
9. that we condemn the delaying tactics on part of prosecution/Police force in Batla House accused trial.
10. that harassment and terrorizing of Muslim youths by Police force/security agencies must stop forthwith in order to protect Human Rights.
